Delay Aversion ∗

چکیده

We address the following question: When can one person properly be said to be more delay averse than another? In reply, several (nested) comparison methods are developed. These methods yield a theory of delay aversion which parallels that of risk aversion. The applied strength of this theory is demonstrated in a variety of dynamic economic settings, including the classical optimal growth and tree cutting problems, repeated games and bargaining. Both time-consistent and time-inconsistent scenarios are considered. JEL Classification: D11, D90.

Delay aversion in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is mediated by amygdala and prefrontal cortex hyper-activation.

BACKGROUND Experimental research supports delay aversion as a motivational feature of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To investigate the neurobiology of delay aversion in ADHD, this study examined whether adolescents with ADHD display an unusually strong activation in affective brain regions in response to cues predicting forthcoming delay and whether these effects are (a) dela...

Reference Points and Loss Aversion in Intertemporal Choice (Preliminary)

Reference points and loss aversion are two essential and commonly used concepts in behavioral economics. In this paper, based on insight of Loewenstein’s (1988) reference point model, we construct a structural model for intertemporal choice with reference points and loss aversion by considering four scenarios: delay of gains, delay of losses, speed-up of gains, and speed-up of losses. We use pa...

Impulsivities and Parkinson's Disease: Delay Aversion Is Not Worsened by Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) improves motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but can exert detrimental effects on impulsivity. These effects are especially related to the inability to slow down when high-conflict choices have to be made. However, the influence that DBS has on delay aversion is still under-investigated. Here, we tested a group of 21 PD patie...

Inhibitory Deficits, Delay Aversion and Preschool AD/HD: Implications for the Dual Pathway Model

The dual pathway model proposes the existence of separate and neurobiologically distinct cognitive (inhibitory and more general executive dysfunction) and motivational (delay aversion) developmental routes to AD/HD. The study reported in this paper explores the relation between inhibitory deficits and delay aversion and their association with AD/HD in a group of three-year-old children. Childre...
